Wednesday in the Kitchen: Re-Thinking the Pantry

You know what I can’t stand?  Your run of the mill, bulky pantry cabinet.  Made to match the rest of your cabinets, it’s big and heavy and sticks out like a sore thumb.  Why try to match at all?  Why not make it special on its own?

Like a vintage cupboard or a built-in closet with intricate doors.  A break from the norm adds a nice layer of depth and intrigue to your standard kitchen.

Love these carved fretwork doors
this mirrored armoire would make the perfect pantry…
More mirrored doors…
Vintage style doors with a bit of glass…

Or go a little bold.  Klein blue pantry?  Yes please
Stick it behind a barn door…
this old house via haven and home
built-in, ornate china cupboard pantries…
These are nice too…
  1. Uh oh. Now you’ve got me thinkin’ and that’s never good for my wallet.

  2. Belly

Gosh, now I want to move into a bigger house that will allow me this.

  3. You know I LOVE it all- those built in china cabinet ones are just so divine- also loving the antique door looking ones. Thanks for the inspiration- adding it to the large file:)

  4. Some of my favorite kitchens in there!

We considered using a deco armoire as a pantry for our kitchen, but since the pantry is next to the fridge, it would have looked like two big boxes. Oh well, maybe next house?

You know I love that first image. This is such a fabulous idea, a great way to add something unusual to such a functional space. I love so many of your examples. Great round-up!

  6. This is totally brilliant…i think a lot of times, people are so busy making it *functional* that they forget it can be *fabulous* as well! It seems like that is the principle behind a lot of fantastic design, making the mundane *mah-velous” (c:

  7. So true. Pantry needs to be functional but really…does it need to be so darn ugly. Clearly not!!

Give me a barn door any day!
    :)

  9. I so agree….lets change things up here in the kitchen industry…it has been way to basic and boring for so long!!!
