Ikea is catching on

Has anyone seen these new pieces from Ikea?

The Nyvoll cabinet family looks suspiciously like the popular Rast Hack that has been floating around the interwebs.  So for those of you who love the look of stained wood and white lacquer, but are too lazy to hack yourself… it’s your lucky day!
Priced at $99, $199, and $299, Nyvoll comes as a nightstand, a 3-drawer dresser and a 6-drawer dresser/credenza.  Not as cheap as the rast, but it sure is nice to have the flexibility.
I haven’t seen them in person, but based on the internet photos, the wood looks a wee bit fake and cheap to me.  I prefer the look of real wood, stained.  But hey, I like the effort!  I guess Ikea inspires us, and We inspire Ikea?
What do you guys think?

Can you still find these dressers or night stands anywhere?

  2. Qam

I just bought these for my new apartment and honestly i can tell you i am totally impressed with the quality of these compare to rest of IKEA stuff, These are not cheap, Solid wood is so expensive compare to 349$, as i said i just bought one and after assembling i am going to get the rest of nyvoll stuff, My wife loved after i assembled it fully and it’s so heavy i needed three people to move after it was assembled.

    I would definitely recommend it.

  3. Amara

I’m in Australia and the Ikea 6 drawer unit is $349.00. I sourced some quotes from cabinet makers for something almost identical but obviously real wood stained (as I also prefer it). First quote $7200.00. Second quote $6550.00. Third quote $4800.00

    Mmmmm, Ikea it is.

  4. Joy

i saw them today and i was impressed. looked as good as some other brands that sell at a much higher price. i do like the look of the stained wood in your hacks better though as well as the hardware. however, i am not great with DIY projects so I will be buying that six drawer dresser for my two boy’s room.

just discovered your blog and just LOVE so many of your posts. gorgeous stuff!

  5. Naomi– What’e the name of the website that shares Ikea Hacks? I’ve heard of it but have never seen it.

p.s. I have three Master Plans for my house up on APPLESandRUBIES, if you have time , come over and tell me your fave, please!

  6. I think your hacks are waaay better, but this isn’t bad for the lazy types like moi!

  7. Well they’re no dummies. It was only a matter of time I guess. I agree with you though that I don’t think it’ll live up to any of the great hacks

  8. I agree I prefer the real wood stained.

  9. Brandi

Yeah what would you do for awesome hardware? The thing about the Rast is how many different ways you can hack it. But I’m sure these will be a great mass seller for them and that’s what their goal is!

  10. You’re right, Bri. I’m not sure what drilling into that lacquer would do. Might be hard to add your own hardware. And we all know hardware is the best part!

  11. Meh, hardware sucks on it. And I bet using your own might cause problems sh*t.

  12. It looks like it’s the dark brown faux wood and on this piece, I agree with you, the stained real wood is better.
