Cottage Update: Tweaking the Stairs

Why hello there…
Something exciting happened today at the cottage so I thought I would share.  I got some steps.  You may not have realized I was missing steps, or that there was step drama, but I’m happy to report as of today that one small little part of the renovation is complete.  Sort of.

Originally my stairs went straight down to my half-wall where there was a landing, then they turned the corner and opened up into my living space.  They were also carpeted.

While the columns of the half-wall were quaint, I found the wall to be visually obtrusive and wanted to whole space to be opened up.  So we took down the half wall.  We also ripped up the carpet.

The landing floating there all alone sure looked silly, so we had to decide if we wanted to wrap a lower step on both sides or straighten out the stairs.  I ultimately decided I wanted the extra inches in my 11′ living room and asked my guys to remove the landing completely.

And for a few weeks the stairs looked liked this…

We had to deal with the fact that the railing post was two stairs up.  I didn’t want it to be floating there looking out of place.  After some debate over style and scale, we finally settled on a curved bottom step (it wraps partially onto the bottom post) and straight second step.

Now I just need to stain the treads and paint the risers (white) and I can check one teeny tiny part of this renovation off this list.  You have no idea how good it feels to check things off the list.

Cross your fingers I’ll have more updates soon!

** I wrote this quickly earlier and I just wanted to mention that our carpenter, Angelo, knocked this one out of the park.  He came up with the mock-up for me and turned it into a great detail in the home.  I’m lucky to work with such a talented team!

What a great resolution. Once the painting is complete, it will look as though it had always been that way. I very much like the curve. Bravo to Angelo!
