Cottage Talk: Neutral Rug in the living room

You probably wouldn’t know it from the way I’ve been ferociously snatching up and using colorful tribal rugs (see here, here and here,) but I actually intend on going pretty neutral in my cottage living room.  I plan to throw down a sisal rug and layer a cowhide rug over it.  I already own both of these, so it makes my life easy-peasy.  I love the layered look and it allows me to have color and pattern pop elsewhere in the room.  Since the first floor is totally open, I hesitate to use heavy pattern in major ways.  Trust me, there will be some, but I’m thinking I’ll go more sophisticated and classic on the first floor and then a little looser and bohemian on the second and third floors. These rooms are serving as inspiration for me.  Though honestly, I think my space will look pretty different then all of them.  I guess we will just have to wait and see!

  1. I love that looks so much. I’m sure it’s going to be awesome. Can’t wait to see it all come together! Love your style!

  2. Love the look of a neutral look layered with a hide- can’t wait to see it all come together!

  3. I really do love how the look of jute injects a dose of casual informality to any space. Very unstuffy but at the same time super functional for high-traffic areas. I’m sure the look of a layered cowhide will soften up the feel, especially in softer tonal shades like beiges and creams. World Market makes a fantastic version for super cheap too! Can’t wait to see how it all develops!

Thank you for stopping by with such awesome feedback, hope to see you back soon!

    Peace. Love. LOL!

  4. Tobe- yes, mine is a jute. not soft per se, but definitely not scratchy. I tend to interchange the terms- bad decorator!

I’ve kind of been loving these types of rugs lately! I’m all for the idea of layering, trying to figure out a way to make it work in my new home as well 🙂

  6. wait. sisal or jute? i went sisal and ’tis quite mean on the feet…but i’ve found a few wool/jute combos that are soft, so i’ve been thinking of moving mine around. i know you’re planning to layer (my plan, too, only prob with a colorful rug), so maybe you’re not all that concerned about that?

but, yes, love the concept! great minds 🙂

  7. I think the look is so versatile and chic. I think it would be beautiful plus I know you will add a lot of color everywhere else so I think it would be nice to have a neutral rug.

  8. That Ashley Whittaker space is wonderful, and as for pattern, I say go for it!

Hmm.. now you have me contemplating sisal in our living room. It’s actually a long and narrow space, so I’m planning on two seating areas– one television viewing and the other in front of the fireplace for cozying up and playing games and drinking hot cocoa and such. I kept thinking I want two different rugs that are similar in tones but different in pattern, but you’ve got me thinking that I should just get two sisals/jutes/seagrass somethings. I love pattern, but I’m also terrified of going overboard. Any recommendations?
