Girly Glam Bath 95% reveal

Well after weeks of construction, a tile delay, a painting break and camera malfunction, I think it’s finally time to show Miss GirlyGlam‘s new bathroom. We aren’t at 100% yet- we still need a few accessories and a … shower rod. (Unfortunately, while Angelo was hanging the shower valance and curtains the rod snapped in two. I may have had a small meltdown when that happened on Friday. You would think it was MY bathroom!) So I can’t show you the Pièce de résistance yet, but I will reveal some of the other details.

Before we move to the After, you can give yourself a refresher on the Before HERE. And just a reminder that last week we were painting and the week before that we were doing THIS.

Here is a peak of the vanity area. It was a tight space, but instead of the traditional medicine cabinet and sink cabinet we opted for a Kallista metal vanity console with flanking narrow cabinets and a Venetian mirror. We did mirrored doors on top to help make the room feel more open. A ming marble border wraps around the whole room.

Our very first selection was the minty Ming tiles and I knew right away that Caitlin Wilson’sMint Fleur Chinoise fabric would be to perfect compliment to the marble. This shaped cornice was my design and seeing it come to life makes me incredibly happy. (The shower curtain valance is the same shape and fabric.)

Since space was tight, we really wanted to maximize storage, so I added a medicine cabinet on the wall across from the vanity. With flanking side sconces, this is the perfect make-up spot. (Though at, 11, I’m not sure if GirlyGlam wears makeup quite yet.) The radiators used to be exposed and ugly. We made custom covers and now it’s a pretty accent in the room.

Here is the detail on the dripping crystal sconces. We didn’t have space around the vanity to do sconces, so we wanted to have decorative lighting elsewhere. They are from Shades of Light and I can’t really give them a full recommendation. They came without instructions and our electricians were totally boggled. Luckily Angelo figured it out, but it wasn’t an easy installation.

Hey look it’s the toilet! Yea I know, not very exciting, but this was the best shot I could get of the floor. Its a carrara marble basketweave with ming inserts. It’s hard to tell but the inserts are the same as the wall border. Another detail that I couldn’t capture with my lens is that the walls are a very pale mint. Subtle, but pretty!

The Full shot! As I mentioned, the room is small (5 foot by 10 foot,) so it was REALLY hard for me to capture images. Once GirlyGlam Dressing Room is complete, I will bring in a pro with a wide angle lens to do the final shots. You guys are going to LOVE the shower curtain!

I’d like to thank Erin, for taking my amateurish photos and editing them to look all sparkly and pretty. If you follow her blog, (which you should) you know that Erin is an insanely talented photographer who is renovating her own home and has crazy good style. I wish she lived in Philadelphia so I could carry her around in my pocketbook and have her photograph my whole life.

An Inspiring neutral-glam kitchen

We just got our most recent issue of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and can’t get enough of this kitchen designed by Design Galleria! So many details to covet here, but we will just name a few.

1. Shapes & Curves. We love the repeated theme of curves- from the fretwork cabinetry panels, to the curved table end to the circular chandelier. How about the shape of the island? We love the “T” concept. Great for a medium sized kitchen that want to incorporate both an island and a table.

2. Unexpected elements. Sconces flanking range hood? Love it! Marble trimmed hood? Perfect. Also like the metallic subway tile backsplash. One last touch- the aluminum chairs. It’s nice to add more modern touches into traditional spaces.

Details to mimic for your Kitchen Remodel

Just a few things that make a kitchen feel extra special….

1. Go for the gold with this gorgeous Moroccan trellis backsplash. Calcutta Gold marble interweaves with glass tile to create a lovely repeating pattern.

3. Find a space to display some of your pretty plates. The colors and textures will add a whole new dimension. Don’t have pretty plates? Well maybe it’s time to get a few. Does it really make sense to have a new kitchen and ugly old plates? Step up your plate game.

4. If the layout allows, have a designated dish cupboard that has a special look. Go for oversized hardware to differentiate it from the rest of your cabinets. Not everything has to match!

5. Do you match your shirt to your pants, or do you coordinate the two? Same thing with cabinets, wall cabinets don’t need to be identical to base cabinets, they just need to coordinate. Mix wood with white. You just may have a richer, more interesting space.

Are framed shower doors making a comeback?

For as long as I’ve been in this industry (8 years!) frameless shower doors have been King. Clients want their showers as open as possible with All glass (or even no glass) and no visible obstructions. No enclosed cave-like setting, No dated framed door. Clean and Seamless has been the look of choice.

I used to agree. And then I started spying a repeated pattern of gorgeous framed doors that are sophisticated, chic, defined, yet still open. They add architectural interest and can be a perfect finishing detail for a traditional-style bathroom.

I think the extra detail and definition of framing doesn’t close-in the shower… rather it makes it stand out in a special way. It’s a nod to an antique look, but with all the amenities you would want in a modern bath.

When you choosing your shower door, make sure you consider the style and era of your bathroom. Would you add an ultra-contemporary kitchen cabinet to your traditional kitchen? Well the same theory applies to your shower door.

Would you frame in your shower? Or open all the way?

Kitchens: The Double Island

If space allows, the double island is the most efficient layout for a kitchen. It allows for work and traffic flow to be separated. Each area can have its own zone: prep, clean up, snack and seating/conversation. Everything in its place and room for work and play. Sounds pretty perfect, right?

Kitchens are more than just work areas- they are living areas. When planning your kitchen, you should think about how you will really use the space. Where will the laptop go? Do you want a cozy area to hang out?

The double island is another way to separate zones and help your kitchen-and home- function better.

I also happen to like the visual line they create. Perfectly punctuated by a big hood, or sink with large window at the end. Though the curvy island (#3) is pretty neat too!

A few colorful Kitchen Nibbles

Just a few colorful pretties for you to feast your eyes on.

#1. Art + patterned stools + Hicks pendants = Happy Pretty Kitchen. I could do without the window valance though.

#2. Colorful open shelving. Oh yea baby.

#3 Table lamps on the counter, topiaries, and a blue chair

#4 Dark Green cabinets, red pendents, mosaic tile floor. I’d never think to do this combo, but I thinkits fab.

# 5 Colorful, patterned romans. OK, technically this isn’t a kitchen, but I am dying to do something like this in a kitchen. Instant warmth and charm.
